Corrugated Roofing Cape Town covers the traditional wave-profile sheeting found on Cape cottages, Victorian terraces, outbuildings, farm sheds and plenty of modern homes chosen for the look. Compare quotes for installation, repairs and replacement.
It is the oldest sheeted roof profile in the country and still one of the most practical: light, quick to install, and suited to the steeper pitches on older Cape Town housing stock.

- Heritage and period homes. Victorian and Edwardian houses in Observatory, Woodstock, Wynberg, Kalk Bay and the City Bowl, where the profile is part of the streetscape.
- Cape cottages and farm buildings. Traditional corrugated iron on smallholdings and in the Winelands.
- Verandas and lean-tos. Curved corrugated sheeting over stoeps and bullnose verandas, which the profile bends to easily.
- Outbuildings and workshops. Garages, sheds, stables and storerooms.
- Modern homes by choice. Architects specifying it for the texture and shadow line rather than for cost.

Asbestos Cement Corrugated Sheets
Older grey corrugated cement sheeting may contain asbestos. Manufacture and use of asbestos products was prohibited in South Africa in 2008, but the material remains on buildings put up decades earlier. It cannot be identified reliably by eye, and modern fibre cement looks much the same. If your roof is grey cement sheeting rather than metal and predates the mid-1990s, have it sampled and analysed before anyone disturbs it. Removal, repair and disposal of asbestos-containing material is work for a contractor registered with the Chief Inspector at the Department of Employment and Labour, carried out under the Asbestos Abatement Regulations. Do not cut, drill, break or pressure-wash it. See asbestos roof removal in Cape Town.

Indicative Cape Town ranges, not quotations. Period properties usually cost more per square metre than their size suggests: steep pitches, awkward access on narrow terraced plots, curved verandas and heritage detailing all add labour.

Compare Corrugated Roofing QuotesHeritage Approval
Many corrugated roofs sit on buildings old enough to fall under heritage protection. Structures over 60 years old generally require permission before alteration or demolition work, and some areas carry additional controls on roof appearance. Where that applies, replacing corrugated with a modern profile may not be permitted and like-for-like replacement is the route. Confirm the position with the City or Heritage Western Cape before finalising a specification.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a corrugated roof cost in Cape Town?
Supplied and installed onto existing purlins, roughly R400 to R780 per square metre. A full strip and replace runs R520 to R950 including disposal, so a 60 square metre cottage roof typically lands between R32,000 and R62,000.
What pitch does corrugated roofing need?
Around 10 degrees as a minimum, which is steeper than IBR requires. Below that, water backs up at the laps in driving rain.
Is corrugated iron still a good roofing material?
Yes. Modern corrugated sheeting is coated steel rather than plain iron, is light, installs quickly and lasts 20 to 40 years depending on coating and exposure.
Can corrugated sheeting be curved for a veranda?
Yes, and the profile bends to a curve more readily than squared profiles do. Curved sheets cost more because they are rolled to a radius before installation.
Does my old grey cement roof contain asbestos?
It may, if it predates the mid-1990s, and it cannot be told apart from modern fibre cement by eye. Have it sampled and analysed by a laboratory, and do not disturb, cut or wash it in the meantime.
Can I replace corrugated with IBR?
Usually yes on an ordinary property, and it is slightly cheaper. On heritage-protected buildings the appearance may be controlled, so check before assuming the change is allowed.
Why does corrugated roofing rust at the edges first?
Cut edges expose bare steel with no coating over them, so ends, screw holes and mitres corrode before the face of the sheet does. Near the coast this happens noticeably faster.
How long does it take to replace a corrugated roof?
A small cottage roof is two to five days. Steep pitches, scaffolding and heritage detailing extend that.
